The touch-pad buttons are intuitive, and the printed directions clear, so there's no excuse for not waking up to the aroma of a freshly brewed pot of java. To prepare for making a pot at any hour, the lid lifts up (hinges in rear), exposing the brew basket: add a flat-bottomed paper filter and the ground coffee of your choice. There's ample pour space for water, the level of which you can view through a convenient window on either side. Simply close the lid and push the On button. Auto/On and the clock buttons set the time for delayed start.
The most satisfying thing about the glass carafe is that the wide lip pours without a single drip. In addition, the broad bottom on the carafe affords good surface contact with the stay-hot plate for up to two hours; at that point, the machine shuts off automatically for safety. Those who can't wait for a sip before the entire pot is brewed will appreciate the Sneak-a-Cup feature. While the coffeemaker stands 13 inches tall, it must be pulled forward on a counter to clear most cabinets since the raised lid requires 22 inches. Pluses: Good coffee; large 12 cup capacity; sturdy carafe with comfortable handle; no spills when pouring coffee; no noisier or slower than my prior coffeemakers; 2-hour automatic shut-off for fire safety; price (especially since the Amazon price dropped $7 less than a month after I ordered it).
Minuses: Carafe lid connection looks fragile; no permanent filter; single cover for water compartment and coffee container; fragile looking insides; 2-hour automatic shut-off can be annoying unless you remember to turn the unit off and then on again to reset the timer before it turns off the unit.
Suggestion: Do not purchase the permanent filter on line. With shipping, it will cost close to $20. You can get one for about one-third that at a local hardware store. Size: 2 1/2 inches high; 4 1/2 inches diameter at the top. The B&D permanent filter has perforations only on the sides, making it a little difficult to clean since coffee sticks to the plastic bottom. Although common sense suggests that perforations on the bottom as well as on the sides would work better, the filter seems to work fine.

I only had this coffee pot a short time, but for the month that I've had it I haven't had any problems. The reviews that I read are pretty accurate so far. the pot dosen't drip and its fast brewing.

To get a coffee maker with these options, optimal brewing temperature, and ease of programming as well as overall use for such a price is unheard of, making this purchase a one and only as well as a no-brainer. For the money you won't find a better coffee maker!

Bought this pot 2 months ago broke carafe.Replacement carafe costs more than I paid for pot to begin with after shipping.

After about 15 years using a Mr. Coffee, I finally decided that it needed replacing. I couldn't find a comparable model to what I had, so I decided to try this B&D SmartBrew. Looks sleeks, works great! No drips, no problems. A great product for the money! I have been burned before by choosing the "designer" name with the designer price, only to find out that I should have trusted in the tried and true. Glad didn't make that mistake again! The only negative that I can come up with is that in order to add the water and coffee, the top needs to lift up quite high. That means that I need to pull the machine forward from under my cabinet to fill it. Minor issue, and hardly worth mentioning. Just want to be fair in my review for why it didn't get 5 stars.
