Stainless steel coffee pressDon't confine the pleasure of pressed coffee to home. With this combination of coffee press and vacuum-insulated thermos, European-style coffee turns up at the office or campground and stays hot three times longer than coffee made in a glass press. Simply spoon in ground coffee, add boiling water, place the lid on with plunger in the up position, wait four minutes, push down the plunger slowly, and . . . Presto! Fresh, piping-hot coffee for two or three hours. Lightweight and virtually unbreakable, the press has a handsome, satin-finish exterior and tough, nonslip, black plastic top and bottom. The press parts and smooth interior clean with sponge or cloth. --Fred Brack

I like coffee. This makes good coffee. It does not appear to be breakable. (I should know, I have broken 2 glass ones on canoe trips in the past) It is a little big and heavy for backpacking, I wish they made one about half this size, but for canoeing and car-camping it is perfect!

It brews a good cup of coffee, it's sturdy, and does its job by keeping it hot. So why only three stars? Because there are two inherent design flaws:
(1) Since you can't see through the insulated walls, it's harder to keep the rod straight while plunging
(2) Coffee continues to steep after the plunger is depressed.
Point #1 is a relatively minor issue (you get used to the mechanics after a while, but you should expect to taste grounds in your cup the first few times you use it (or if you let someone unfamiliar with the press try it), but #2 negates the whole purpose of an insulated press. There's no point to calculating a perfect brew if you're just going to ruin it by letting it continue to steep, and there's no point to getting an insulated press if you can't leave it be without ruining the brew.
Instead of this model, I'd recommend combining two different items: the Thermos Nissan 34-Ounce Stainless-Steel Vacuum Insulated Briefcase Bottle, combined with the Bodum New Brazil 8-Cup French Press Coffee Maker, Black. Better still, both are (currently) eligible for the 4-for-3 promotion at similar price points, so you can get a pretty good deal if you find two more 4-for-3 items in the same range.

My previous press was glass-walled and allowed my coffee to get cold before I could finish it. So when it broke, I purchased this nice stainless-steel model. Now my coffee stays warm and I don't have to worry about breaking it, either. Easy to clean, the spindle screws into the bottom plate, holding the screen in place nicely but making it a snap to disassemble. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is concerned with their press' durability or who is disappointed when their coffee gets cold.

PROS: very well made, keeps coffee warm, and makes great coffee.
CONS: coffee grounds get around metal mesh filter.

Having purchased 5 French presses over the past 3 yrs, and seeing them all end up in the garbage, the glass beakers broken, it piqued my interest to see a stainless press offered on your website . I had just thrown away another broken glass one when I saw this. It works just fine, and costs no more than the glass ones had....except I can tell, this one won't end up in pieces ! A good deal .
