The Brazil works on the same principle as all coffee presses. It combines coarse ground coffee with water that is just off of a boil. This combination along with 4 minutes of extraction time allows the oil and acids that give the coffee it's flavor to be completely extracted so you get a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee each time. After 4 minutes, just press and enjoy. There are no paper filters to soak up the oils, and cleanup is a snap. The 3 Cup Press is 12 oz and yields 3 - 4 oz. cups of coffee.

As other reviewers have noted, this item is much smaller than the picture would suggest, and the plunger is inadequate. Though I'm English, I live in America where we don't drink coffee in infuriatingly tiny doll's-house cups, so three or four ounces is not regarded as one "cup". I like 16-ounce cups of very strong coffee, strong enough to leap out of the cup and attack me if I don't keep an eye on it. After space for the coffee grounds is taken into account, this item only marginally produces even one of my "cups". Also, the plunger is terrible, with a flexing plastic base plate unlike the metal base plate on the full-sized Bodum. Because of that plastic base I suppose, if you make strong coffee so that you have to push down on the plunger, the coffee squirts up the side, out of the press, and onto your hands and the table. I put this little Bodum away as a spare after a day or two, and went out to buy a full-sized Bodum at Target where I could see the actual item before buying it. (That said, I do nevertheless love shopping via Amazon.)

Perfect for ONE large cup of Coffee but BE CAREFUL!!
I bought this because it was small and simple to use.
CAUTION: After about 10 cups of coffee the paper-thin glass this item is made of cracked along the side.
I will now buy another brand because I am afraid even the larger Bodum brand units have this same thin glass.

I assumed that 3 cups is 3 - 4 oz. cups or 12 oz. However, 12 oz. fills the pot right to the top so you can't put the filter in without losing some water. In other words, this is a "one regular" cup pot and should be advertised as such. Other than that, it does make a very good cup of coffee which is what I wanted.

The French press works as advertised, but I was caught off guard by the size. Most coffee cans tout 6 0z. cups, so a 3 cup press should just about fill our mug. Surprized to find that these were 4 oz. cups, so doesn't quite make a full mug.

I purchased three of these french presses recently. Unfortunately Bodum now uses plastic parts in the filter portion of the french press. The filter itself is still made from metal, but the supporting pieces of the filter are plastic. This means that now users will have plastic chemicals leaching into their coffee. Yum, yum.
This is the part I'm referring to: [...]. This link shows the metal version of this part. Bodum has replaced this metal part with a plastic part in the Brazil french presses.
